A bit of background information may be helpful at this time. It was
customary in German families for males to be given the first name
Johann, and to be called or known by their middle name (Georg, Franz,
Adam, etc) or the double-name, such as Johann Georg. German females
were customarily given the first name Anna or Maria, followed by the
name by which they were called or known, (Susannah, Elizabeth, Barbara,
etc); their double-name was also used. These first names, Johann,
Maria and Anna, were "saints' names."
